I just attended the Gun Rights Week event in Memorial Hall. I found this event to be very interesting, especially to see the wide variety of people that get behind the second amendment. There were college students, local gun supporters and governmental supporters. The event addressed a number of different issues. The first and prominent one was the advocacy of students and professors of a legal age and with the correct permits to carry concealed weapons on campus. Different speakers, including delegate Bob Marshall, went over the need to write to your respective senators and legislators to get bills passed to protect your second amendment rights. They also had a lawyer speak who has covered many second amendment and gun carry law suits. He presented the laws to that and entertained numerous questions. This issue is one that is nation wide spread and especially prominent in an academic setting after the Virginia Tech incident. I found it very informative. Thinking about some things we have discussed in class, considering this is not only advocacy, but an argument in the higher courts and bodies of our government, I was particularly listening for some of the other sides arguments. Many of the speakers did bring up points of the other side and how they combat them, and often how many people try to avoid the situation because they do not want to risk getting into such a controversial issue.
