Tonight I went to Take Back the Night. Unfortunately, I missed the first half of the even which featured speakers and music. However, I did make it to the last part which was a speak out in Grafton-Stovall. The speak out was a time where anybody who has ever been affected by sexual assault could voice their opinions and tell their story. The people who spoke were survivors or people who have been affected by another individual's sexual assault known as secondary survivors. One at a time the speaker would go up and tell his or her own story. Many of these stories were extremely emotional. The speak out allowed people to see those who are affected by sexual assault and how it affects their lives.
Take Back the Night, is an evening created to spread awareness of sexual assault and violence against both men and women, and gives people the chance to speak out on the topic and share their stories. I was a little unsure about what to expect when I went, but I left the event feeling empowered and proud to be a student at this school where people work so hard to make people aware of these important issues. As I heard people share their stories in front of everyone, it was extremly touching and emotional. By those people sharing their stories, they are making others more aware of sexual assault and violence and could possibly save a life. I thought it was amazing to watch these people get in front of many people they don't know, and tell their own story, which I'm sure is not an easy thing to do. The event also featured actress Angela Shelton who spoke about her own story of pain and abuse. I thought it was very real to see that abuse even happens to famous people. Take Back the Night truly opened my eyes and gave me insight into other peoples lives. To watch everyone speak and hear their stories was empowering, and I will be sure to help raise awareness of violence and abuse.
