This is in reaction to the recent break-ins, stabbings, and shootings that have occured in areas, highly populated with JMU students. Lou Nagy, an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney downtown will be speaking at the beginning of the meeting on the Harrisonburg communities response as a whole, such as what police, prosecutors, and community members see as the root issue, how they're reacting, and what they think will make the overall harrisonburg community safer.

I attended the debate on how we can make the JMU community safer. I think that the speakers did a very good job of swaying the audience in to what they felt they needed to hear. However, I would have been a lot more comfortable knowing that they were being honest. The whole issue with the house break-ins in Hunters Ridge and some that occurred in Stone Gate are no preventable. The forum should have focused more on what we can do to protect ourselves from the dangers of Harrisonburg. One point was brought up to walk in groups and to try not to carry large amounts of money on you, but I feel these things are common knowledge. The lawyer was not very convincing in helping us to avoid alcohol citations when we are that intoxicated that we need to go to the hospital. Overall the argument in my opinion was weak and failed to show both sides of the issue. I think that Harrisonburg is pretty safe and you have to be aware of the dangers of walking out by yourself late at night.
